About
BIOGRAPHY
Jörg Immendorfs career began 1963 as a student of theater designer Teo Otto and Joseph Beuys at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he himself became a professor in 1996. From 1969 to 1980, Immendorf worked as an art teacher at a public school, and then as a free artist, holding visiting professorships all over Europe. In 1976, a pivotal year in his career, he took part in the Venice Biennial with a performance which criticised the German Democratic Republic's deprivation of liberty. In 1989 he became a professor at Städelschule in Frankfurt/M., Germany. From an art historic perspective he was part of the NEUE WILDE group in Germany in the 1980s.
ABOUT HIS WORK
Immendorf, a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, stage designer performance artist, is known for his expressive figurative and politically charged paintings. His work often explored topics of identity, power and society, blending elements of surrealism ad expressionism. The artist's bold use of color and dynamic brushwork created visually striking compositions that challenged viewers to think critically about the wold around them. His work is a contribution to the genre of historical painting in a contemporary manner. He was influenced by German Renaissance painting and over the decades established his own symbolism.
