About
BIOGRAPHY
Günther Förg's career began in the early 1970s as a student at the Academy of Fine Art Munich, where he himself became a professor in 1999. In 1992 he exhibited at the documenta in Kassel. The same year he started as a professor at Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe. In 1996 he won the prestigious Wolfgang Hahn Prize, which is awarded annually by the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. He later was a professor at the Munich Art Academy, where he was a very influential teacher.
ABOUT HIS WORK
Förg was German painter, sculptor and photographer whose works reveal a lifelong fascination with modernism. From the abstract monochrome paintings of his early work to his photographs of culturally or politically relevant architecture, Förg always engaged with the legacy of the great avant-garde movements of the 20th century. Architectual influences can also be detected in his paintings. His iconic grid ("Gitter" in german) paintings from the 1990s manifest an important position in painting in the 20th century, still relevant today.
