It's the analogy, baby

"It's the analogy, baby" The works of Leonhard Hurzlmeier put the viewer into a basic emotional tension. That's the way it is anyway. As long as one is, again, finally, physically absorbed in contemplating painting on canvas. However, here, in view of these paintings, you may be exposed to a fork in the road that suggests a name, only to withdraw it immediately and then land there again. The titles of the works suggest it, “Cute on Cube” or “Sad Boomer” set readings in motion that suggest a movement in a specified direction. If you look at the canvas, i.e. its painted surface, but then in the face, the dialogue dissolves into the open contemplation of the picture surface. The precise geometry of the surface structure reveals a completely different world. The truth of the aphorisms is, thankfully, an ambiguous one. - It's the economy, stupid - blue and ocher, sympathies, analogies, allegories .... Leonhard Hurzlmeier himself speaks to him, the double path: "An important thought about my work is the impulsively presented contradiction between coercion and freedom." Although this is a generally human theme, it is deliberately presented in a striking way in his work, namely the conflict between the geometric instrument and the visual impetus, an also emotionally controlled gesture of the artistic as a legitimate proof of a truth. We are in the current present, not only with paintings whose color is still damp, but also in social anchorage - the imprisonment in the models, which allows the prescribed individualities no or hardly any discourse and deliberately not resolved by answers. And further Hurzlmeier: "Therefore, but if developed subconsciously, the breadth, the "view" of the Renaissance is missing in my paintings." And yet, according to the prognosis, these works are also timeless. The melody of a surrealism is interwoven with the syntax of a painterly virtuosity, which is not claimed, but named by the texture, by the surface, by the careful nuance of the color gradations. "The “flatness” of the way of working describes (or perverts) a state of social superficiality and narrow-mindedness (but at the same time also technical perfection) that ignores or forgets cultural-historical continuities. However, these historical contexts remain in the “background”, in the sense of a analogical transcendence preserved, entirely in line with a pictorial tradition that has always been inherent in the "image" and already appears as an example in cave painting, but also in early Christian iconography, the "senses" of which we can only guess."
