From Nose To Tail is the first solo exhibition by Martin Wöhrl with Knust Kunz. Showing artworks in a new space is always holding the possibility of a new point of view of a known artistic vocabulary. The Munich born artist is well known for his use of minimalistic materials and aesthetics: wood, concrete and plaster have been playing a significant role in Wöhrl’s practice. Adding the “precious” material of brass the exhibition is becoming a walk on the border between alleged sacral and banal show architecture. Forms and fragments which almost appear too glamorous, because of their smooth polished surfaces, contradict porous concrete and break up the seemingly organic image of the urban and brutalistic group of sculptures and arms. Linoleum - the surfaces of the works “o.T. (Große Uhr)” (“Untitled (Big Clock”) and “o.T. (Kleine Uhr)” (“Untitled (Little Clock”) seem opaque and velvety. The watch hands are made of embedded brass. Martin Wöhrl finds his inspiration in his real-life surroundings (in this specific case the Philippus-Church in Munich) as well as in dreams, where everything starts as a bizarre idea, but soon becomes reality through his saw blade and residual material. The material is acting as an agent here and reflects the show’s title: FROM NOSE TO TAIL: there is no hierarchy. Just like in gastronomy, where the saying finds its origin, where filet and offal are being used and consumed equally.
